The button mushroom is the immature state of the agaricus bisporus fungi.

The cantharellus cibarius, also known as the chanterelle, girolle, tends to grow in clusters is mossy, coniferous forests, but can also be found in mountainous birch forests or low-growing herbs.

The enokitake, or flammulina filiformis, is traditionally used for soups and can be found naturally growing on the stumps of trees like mulberry or persimmon. 

The common name for the amanita muscaria, or fly agaric, comes from the word musca, meaning 'a fly'! Traditionally, it was mixed with milk and used as a pesticide.

If dug up, the mycellium of the coprinopsis atramentaria or inky cap, can often be found to originate on buried dead wood. As its name suggests, the cap of this fungi resembles dripping ink.

The king bolete, or boletus edulis, is also known as porcini, which directly translates to 'little pigs'. This is either due to its body's resemblence to piglets, or to the fondness pigs have for eating them.

While the parrot waxcap, or gliophorus psittacinus, is edible, eating it is usually not recommended, for its small size renders it insubstantial and its wax-like body grants it an incredibly slimy texture.

The entoloma hochstetteri, or werewere-kokako, is so named for its colour resembles the blue wattle of the kōkako bird.
