It was a cool and peaceful autumn day, Libra breathed in the air brimming with the mellow scents of the changing leaves. What was once green and lush leaves and bushes, are now painted in a multitude of magnificent shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Libra, the opalescent baobear, ventured into the woodland forest, all dressed up and prepared for a hopefully enjoyable and productive day.
The ground beneath Libra's paws was carpeted with crisp crunching leaves and rich textures of fallen twigs and mosses, the rustling produced by each step was certainly enjoyable to the baobear's ear.
Autumn's bounty was in full bloom, it's the perfect season for finding all kinds of delicious and magical things to collect.
"Certainly, I should be able to return with a basket full of goods."
Libra thought to themself with a certain determination as they continued to wander into the brightly lit woods, with a wood-woven basket in one paw.
The basket itself was still empty, excluding an encyclopedia and a lovely-looking blanket cover Libra had brought earlier.
As Libra shuffled past the drying tinted trees and shrubs, their keen eyes scanned the area, keeping an eye out for the perfect forageable. Every now and then their nose would pick up hints of the vivid aroma of a potential treat nearby, and off they went for a closer look.
"Oh, an elderberry shrub!"
The baobear excitedly marveled as they inspected the ripen purple-hued elderberries.
They were soft and squishy to the touch, gently Libra collected the treats and placed them into the comforts of the basket.
The opalescent baobear was very determined to collect as much as possible despite being a novice forager. In no time, their basket was filled with an assortment of freshly picked berries, nuts, and mushrooms. Their book of foraging encyclopedia is now tucked under their tiny arm, which they occasionally review so as to not accidentally pick up any poisonous berries or mushrooms.
The scent of the earth tickled the baobear's nose. A light breeze gently danced through Libra's fur, making their headscarf rustle.
"Achoo-!"
Libra sneezed softly. The weather had gotten quite chilly it seems. Libra tightened their headscarf in response, covering parts of their face.
"I should go and find a warmer spot.."
The baobear mumbled to themself.
As they made their way deeper into the forest, they could feel their inner compass begin to lead them toward something big. Could it be a new kind of fruit? Perhaps they would even find a rare mushroom!
Reaching a dead end, Libra took the time to gaze at their surroundings. It seemed to be the ideal place to take a break. There were heaps of vibrant leaves scattered all over the ground, leaving no soil exposed, with some mushrooms sticking out from the leaves. The large trees were a welcome sight, and Libra took in the view of the giant mushroom sitting in the shade.
The bright gleaming sun broke the cover of the tall trees in patches. Letting streams of golden rays pierce through the leafy shadows, hence enhancing the woods' warm atmosphere.
The birds, squirrels, and other small mammals were scurrying about as they prepared for the upcoming winter season. To the north, a faint mist hangs in the air, shrouding the far distant hills in mystery.
This was the perfect spot for resting, thus Libra laid down on the pile of yellow leaves, so they could feel more comfortable. They had a feeling that resting here for a while would be a very good idea...
"Hmm.. This is nice.."
Libra calmly spoke to themself, enjoying the warmth of the sun underneath the protection of the trees.
The baobear decided to unfurl the encyclopedia, moving the hundreds of pages swiftly with its paws. Shortly, they stopped at a portrait of a mushroom resembling the gigantic mushroom situated close to them, its description on the side. It seems that particular mushroom is poisonous..Β
Libra's mind was so focused on reading and zoning out, that they were close to falling asleep, even..
However, out of the corner of Libra's eye, a yellow chanterelle mushroom managed to catch their attention. Curious, they moved closer to the mushroom. After a few moments of studying the mushroom, they noticed something strange about it. It moved ever so slightly! Surely, they must have imagined it..
The chanterelle mushroom blinks!
No, that must be a trick of the light.
Libra rubbed their eyes and blinked several times, ensuring that they were not dreaming.
After giving the mushroom another puzzled glance, the curious baobear decided to get some answers.
They reached out with their paw and gently tapped on the mushroom's cap. To their surprise, the mushroom responded by making a soft squeak-like sound. Could this mushroom be sentient? There must be something special about this particular mushroom.
Fascinated by their discovery, Libra asked the mushroom,
"Are you alive?"
The blinking mushroom responded by shaking and nodding its cap in an excited manner. It then danced in place as if to say
"Yes!"
Libra was amazed to meet such a unique being in the forest. They decided to take a risk and see what would happen if they picked up the mushroom. After carefully picking up the creature, they noticed it didn't resist. It seemed to enjoy the experience! Its gills were now moving rapidly as if it was trying to communicate with Libra.
"I want you to be my friend," Libra said to the mushroom as they placed the creature back down. "In fact, how about I take you home with me?"
The mushroom squeaked and wriggled once more but this time, it was a more delicate dance as if to say "Yes, I accept your offer."
Libra, filled with excitement, began asking if the mushroom had a name.
The mushroom responded by shaking its cap. Libra interpreted this as the mushroom's way of communicating that it didn't have a name yet!
They decided to adopt it as a unique pet and give it a name. Since the mushroom had a yellow cap and looked similar to a ginkgo leaf, Libra decided to name it Ginkgo.
After a brief moment of silence, Libra called out to it and said "What about Ginkgo?"
The mushroom responded with a series of musical chirps.
The mushroom danced to the point where it was almost spinning, clearly excited about its new name and newfound friendship with Libra.
It was clear that Ginkgo and Libra had made a special bond, despite not sharing the same language.
Libra's expression also changed, going from one of curiosity to one of joy. The baobear knew right then and there that they had to take Ginkgo with them, and so they did. Along with a bountiful harvest within their basket.
Libra and Ginkgo made their way home, their basket filled with mushrooms, nuts, and berries. As they walked, Libra imagined all the delicious dishes they could make once they got home.
Once they were back in the safety of their cozy home, Libra quickly got to work on putting together a mouthwatering meal out of the successful forage. They made a wild rice pilaf with earthy mushrooms, topped it with fresh berries, and sprinkled nuts on top for a nutty crunch. After setting the table, Libra and Ginkgo sat down to enjoy their first meal together.
It turned out to be a fruitful day after all..
